Low-hydrolysis nonionic PAM is considered when the test plan calls for minimal anionic character and a bridging-led response. It can be useful in weakly acidic or charge-ambiguous suspensions, but it is not a universal substitute for anionic or cationic polymer.
Verify what near-neutral means
Request the supplier test method and range used to describe hydrolysis or ionic character. Values measured by different techniques are not automatically comparable. Retain the exact grade code and lot with the application result.
Do not infer performance from pH alone. Particle surfaces, multivalent ions, dissolved organics and primary coagulants can change adsorption and floc growth.
Compare charge families fairly
Prepare nonionic, low-anionic and relevant cationic candidates under identical conditions when the correct family is uncertain. Hold coagulant dose, pH, mixing and active polymer dose constant for the first screen.
A flat nonionic response is useful evidence. It may indicate that charge interaction, different molecular architecture or corrected precipitation is needed rather than more dose.
Write an evidence-based specification
Connect the grade to feed range, preparation, dose window and measured endpoint. Include solution appearance, dissolution check, packaging, storage and document requirements without claiming that one laboratory property guarantees plant performance.
